Mia is a sweet little girl with a big imagination. She loves adventure, but cooking is just not is not her thing. To show her mom just how much she loves her, Mia decides that she will try anything. The consequences are hilariously delightful.

"Surprise in the Kitchen" by Mary Lee is a cute story for the early reader or pre-reader. Mia's mother wants Mia to help her bake cookies, but Mia much prefers eating cookies rather than baking them. Mia thinks her mother makes the best cookies around, but she just can't get excited about helping out in the kitchen.The next morning Mia feels badly because she didn't help her mother, so she decides to make it up to her by making a special breakfast for mother, all by herself. But, unfortunately, she makes more of a mess than a breakfast. In spite of the mess, her mother gives her a big hug and tells her thank you, even though the breakfast wasn't really very good.
This little story has a minimal amount of text, and an abundance of colorful pictures. (There may be more text in this review than in the book.) There are 3 or 4 pages of pictures for every page with text on it, and even then the text is often overlaid on another picture. This book could be manipulated to take a long time to read just by pointing out things in the pictures, or otherwise engaging the listener. Or, it could be read very quickly, due to the minimal amount of actual text. That second option makes it ideal for those bedtimes when the kids beg for "just one more story". (Wait... isn't that EVERY bedtime?)
The illustrations are nicely done, and are sure to hold the attention of your kids for as long as you need them to. I recommend this cute little story book for kids up to maybe first or second grade. It is a cute book that is done well.

Mom makes Mia cookies but Mia does not like to cook. She decides to surprise mom one morning and make her breakfast in bed. The pictures are cute. The story needed to be more detailed. You have to make assumptions on Mia's cooking.
This book is cute and the illustrations are fun. The only problem is that it's formatted like a regular picture book. So some pages have no text because it's on the facing page, only with a kindle there is no facing page. If it could be fixed so the two pages are one frame, it would gain another star.
This book is just okay. The story is about a girl who decides to make her mom breakfast on her own (not really an idea I want to plant in my daughter's head), and things become a mess from there. Mia and her Mom fix things together in the end. Vocabulary is basic. I probably would not get another Mia book.
It was totally awesome pretty. I really liked Mia cooking for her mom.

As always, the Mia illustrations are adorable. My daughter loves seeing what Mia will do next. I'm sure we will read this one over and over just like the rest of the series. Glad I found these books on Free Fiction!

One can't help but adore Mia's adventurous imaginations. Here her mom invites her to make cookies. Of course it's more fun to eat them than make them. Also more fun to imagine sweet treats in the sea, on trees, etc. Later she decides to surprise her mom and make her breakfast. You can imagine how that went! ~Cute read. (reviewed 3/27/13)
Mary Lee has done it again. Surprise in the Kitchen scored a homerun with my daughter. We enjoyed the colorful graphics and that the words are age appropriate making it easy for kids to understand and read along. We are completely in love the Mia series and can't wait for another book.
I highly recommend this book and the other Mia books for parents with daughters. Each book has underlying lesson that you can share with you daughter.
This was a simple and cute story for younger children. I felt this book was more appropriate for girls than boys, but my kids enjoyed it anyway. I like that the mother does not get upset with her little girl when she makes a mistake, as she was doing something nice for someone else. This book had a nice message that I thought was appropriate for a younger audience. I liked the pictures and thought it was nice to see that there were some pages that were just pictures without text, as this encourages my little ones as they are reading, giving them a little break in between passages. Overall I liked this book and would recommend it for mothers looking for a cute way to keep their kids entertained. It was also nice that this book was a little but longer than some of the other nooks I have seen intended for younger kids. I will check out the other books by this author. Nicely done.
